MANAGEMENT AND ORGANISATION OF THE LAW FIRM WHERE I WAS POSTED

I was posted to the Ministry of Justice. The Ministry of Justice is located at state secretariat, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, Ogun State. The ministry of justice is in charge of all legal matters concerning the state government and its agencies or the state government and private individuals. The ministry of justice offers legal advice, legal aid and it entertains criminal cases, civil cases, commercial matters, probate cases and matrimonial cases.

The Ministry is under the co-ordination of the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice who is often assisted by the Solicitor-General and Permanent-Secretary, Mrs Yetunde Oresanya. There are 6 departments in the ministry of justice. The departments include; the Department of Legal Drafting, the Department of Public Prosecution, the Department of Civil Litigation, the Department of Commercial Services, the Office of Administrator General and Public Trustee and the Department of Citizens’ Rights.

Each department is headed by a director. The director and the deputy director of each department has its own separate office. The director’s office of each department has two rooms of which the main office is occupied by only the director with a toilet therein and the second room is occupied by the secretaries, clerks, supporting staffs and lawyers doing their NYSC. Each office is a modern law firm. it is IT compliant as there are computers, printers, photocopying machine, wireless internet system, stapler machine and scanners. Each department has its own state counsels. There are about 93 state counsels in the ministry and 83 administrative staffs. The state counsels of each department have their departmental office headed by the chief state counsel of each department.  In each departmental office, there are about four or more state counsels.

The ministry of justice is located in a purpose built office and it is quite far from the court. The firm occupies the ground floor and the first floor and it consists of about 12 offices, one library and a conference room.  At the ministry of justice, there is a conference room where meetings and client interviews are held.  The conference room is spacious with adequate furniture and air conditioners. Beside the conference room is the library. The library has only a chair and a table with inadequate materials. There are two desktop computers in the library. The ministry of justice has toilets but only staffs were allowed to use it.

The ministry ensured to keep proper and adequate records of each matter manually in cabinets. The firm has an efficient filing system. The ministry has custom made files and the names of parties are written on the case files. Each state counsel has the responsibility of keeping custody of the case files of cases they are handling in their offices. On Fridays, departmental meetings are usually held at the conference hall where reports on cases handled are given, fresh cases are assigned to lawyers and cause lists prepared for the next week.

In conclusion, I had an invaluable experience at the ministry of justice. the ministry of justice is a standard law firm.
